How much does fire door repair cost?
It depends on the fault. New seals usually cost £60–£140 per door, a new closer £120–£250 and a re-hang £80–£180, before VAT. Most repairs cost far less than a new doorset. Grouping several repairs into one visit lowers the cost, as travel and set-up are shared. You get a fixed price for each repair before we start.
Can a fire door be repaired?
Yes, if the leaf and frame are sound. Closers, hinges, seals, gaps, glazing beads and small holes can all be repaired. Doors that are split, warped or have no proof of rating usually need replacing.
Does repairing a fire door affect its rating?
Not if it is done right. Repairs must use fire-rated parts that suit the door’s test evidence. Filler, foam or ordinary hinges can quietly undo the rating. Every repair we make is recorded with before and after photos. That record shows the work kept the door within its test evidence.
How do you fix a fire door with gaps that are too wide?
We first re-hang the door and adjust the hinges. If the gap is still too wide, a matching hardwood edge strip can be fitted to bring it back to 2 to 4 mm. Wide gaps often come from worn hinges, so we check those first. Fixing the cause stops the gap opening up again a few months later.
Can you fill a hole in a fire door?
Small holes, such as old lock cut-outs, can be repaired with fire-rated materials. Large holes or damage through the core usually mean a new door. Fire-rated repairs use matching timber or approved repair kits, not wood filler or foam. Filler burns through quickly, so a filled hole can let fire straight through the door.
Can I repair a fire door myself?
Simple jobs like replacing a sign are fine. Repairs to closers, hinges, seals or the leaf should be done by someone competent, as the wrong parts can void the rating. If in doubt, ask a specialist to check the door after any work. A quick check now is cheaper than replacing a door that fails later.
Why does my fire door not close properly?
The most common causes are a weak or badly adjusted closer, a door that has dropped on its hinges, or a door rubbing on its frame. All three can usually be fixed in one visit.
How quickly can a failed fire door be repaired?
We can often visit within the week. Doors that will not close on an escape route are given priority. A fire door maintenance plan helps stop the same faults coming back. If a part has to be ordered, we can often make the door safe on the first visit and return to finish the repair once the part arrives.
