How much does it cost to fit care home fire doors?
A supplied and fitted FD30S doorset usually costs £550–£950, before VAT. Wider doors, free-swing closers and vision panels add to this. FD60 compartment doors cost around £800–£1,300. Fitting a whole wing at once is usually cheaper per door.
What is the best closer for care home doors?
Free-swing closers suit most resident rooms. They let the door move like a normal door with no effort, then close it when the fire alarm sounds. Hold-open devices suit doors that need to stay open, such as corridor doors. We can help you decide which rooms need which device, based on each resident’s needs.
Do care home doors need vision panels?
Many do. Vision panels let staff check on residents without opening the door. On a fire door, the glass must be fire rated and fitted with the right beads and seals. Some homes also fit privacy blinds or film, which must not affect the glass’s fire rating.
How wide should care home doors be?
They need to be wide enough for beds, hoists and wheelchairs. Many bedroom doors are wider than standard, and some openings use one-and-a-half doors. We measure each one and advise. If an opening is too narrow, it may be possible to widen it during the work.
Can you fit doors without moving residents out?
Usually, yes. We fit one room at a time, often while the resident is in a lounge or dining room. Each room is back in use the same day. We plan every move with your staff. We avoid times when residents usually rest, and keep noise and dust to a minimum.
Do new doors need to be linked to the fire alarm?
Doors with hold-opens or free-swing closers must be linked, so they close when the alarm sounds. We work with your alarm contractor and test every link before handover. Without a working link, the door will not close in a fire, so this test is essential.
What rating do care home doors need?
Most bedroom and corridor doors are FD30S. Doors between fire zones, kitchens and plant rooms may need FD60. Your fire risk assessor decides the rating each door needs. If you are not sure, ask your fire risk assessor before ordering new doors.
Will new doors help with CQC inspections?
New doors, fitted and recorded properly, show inspectors that fire safety is taken seriously. Keep the fitting records with your fire safety file. Showing that old, failed doors were replaced is strong evidence of good fire safety management.
What paperwork do we get?
You get photos of each door and its label, a fitting record, and alarm-link test results for each device. These go in your fire safety file. We can also send copies to your head office or fire risk assessor.
Can you fit doors with level thresholds?
Yes. Level thresholds help residents with walking aids and wheelchairs. We make sure the gap under the door still meets the door’s test evidence, often by fitting a drop seal that lowers when the door closes.
